WTF Is Wrong With NBC: New Show To Feature Sassy & Ghetto 9-Year-Old Queenetta
Daija Owens stars as a young Queenetta in NBC’s latest sitcom “Best Friends Forever.” A soft-spoken Daija portrays a sassy and ghetto 9-year-old who clashes with her two white neighbors who have watched her grow up into the stereotype that she is.
In the trailer for the April premiere, Queenetta tells her adult friend that she better let go of her khaki pants now that she is back in the dating field; oh, and that she needs her nails done (conveniently drop a Drake lyric here).
Queenetta, rolls (her eyes, necks) with the best of them. Her character would be cute if it didn’t depict black females as the loud, sassy, in-your-face, angry type-of-person the media commonly portrays us as.
All this show does is prove that there can’t be a central character in a major production without he or she falling prey to a company’s lack of sensitivity and limited scope of black people.
Not only is Queenetta’s name offensive, she clearly has no parents in the trailer (we all know there can only be one black character in these situations).

Dear Fellow White People,
I’ve noticed that when PoC (particularly the many wonderful WoC here on Tumblr) talk about their lived experiences and things happening to them and their communities, especially things inflicted by white people, white patriarchy, or general whiteness there are a great deal many of us who’s first and most vehement response is, “Not all white people are like that!”
As someone who is trying to come get her fellow white folks and herd them onto the clue bus so that PoC don’t have to waste time with you, let me inform you (as they have so often informed you) - if your first response to reading about someone else’s pain is, “But I’m not like that” then, actually, yes you are exactly like that.
They’ve been telling you this for a while. A long while. But you’re not getting it. And you’re showing your ASS or acquired selective sociopathy, which is what I like to call the way whiteness causes you to dehumanize non-white people.
The appropriate response to someone’s pain is empathy. The minimally decent reaction when told you might - however involuntarily or unwittingly - be involved in causing that pain is to think, “Well, gee, I don’t want to be part of that. How can I make sure I’m not doing that?”
If you are a white person who’s pushed back the pervasive, sociopathic influence of whiteness just enough to start asking such questions, then be aware that you still don’t deserve a cookie. Because that’s the bare minimum requirements of not being a total and utter douchewaffle, okay?
When you lay down your very life to combat whiteness, then we’ll talk about maybe a half a cookie or something. Until then, just realize that on the Test of Humanity, that response gets you a couple of points above the pass/fail mark. You pass, but you could be doing so much better.
As for you others?
You are like that. You are once again prioritizing your feelings above their very lives and realities. That’s what makes you EXACTLY like that. I know Tumblr doesn’t like hearing about this but when people talk about “white privilege,” part of what is meant is stuff like the ability to exist beyond the confines of your home without the fear of being killed due to your race or ethnicity.

The best part? When she was told that she should have gotten psychiatric help. Like that shit’s not expensive. Like anyone can just go and get psychiatric help. I remember reading a recent research piece about how black and Latina girls have rather high rates of bulimia, yet are less likely to get help because they can’t afford it. The reason why eating disorders are seen as a middle class white girls problem? Because they’re the only ones who can AFFORD to get the help.
And let’s forget that a lot of Americans don’t have health insurance because they don’t qualify or couldn’t afford it (especially back when this mess happened to her), so it’s very easy that psychiatric help wasn’t available. So being a young child not knowing HOW to cope, while dealing with racism and bullying, even bullying ABOUT her rape, WHAT WAS SHE SUPPOSED TO DO?
And as someone pointed out, that shooter who killed those kids in Ohio, black kids btw, was getting all types of sympathy. HE SHOT KIDS. KILLED THEM. She didn’t kill anyone, and yet is getting ten times the hate THE WHITE BOY WHO KILLED THREE PEOPLE did.

Cultural Appropriation: Dreadlocks
Are Dreadlocks really cultural appropriation?
YES
Here’s why:
Dreadlocks originated first with Jamaican Rastafarians and then in Indian Sages and Yogis. Specifically it was started by holy men. These men renounced all of their worldly belongings (Including combs) and as a result their hair started (and remained) to turn into dreadlocks. In the beginning, it was actually something very beautiful to show that you’d given yourself and all that you possessed to GOD.
Then, it turned into something ugly. When these holy people were seen by others, they were looked down on. Seen as less than because as they gave up all they had, that also meant they gave up their money. They were the poorest of the poor and the dreadlock became a sign of being poor, dirty and less than human.
This was an extremely spiritual symbol. It was not a fad or something people did to show their love of weed.
As time went on, the Indian culture did not see anything terribly interesting about the dreadlocks. However, Jamaicans as well as those in the Caribbean thought otherwise. They believed that the dreadlocks were part of a religious lifestyle and actually considered the hair to be holy and powerful.
Dreadlocks are believed to have made it to the USA during the time of slavery. Both Black slaves as well as Indian slaves were captured and both brought this holy symbol and belief with them.
For the ignorant that want to get dreadlocks because they are Bob Marley fans or because they “Like the Rastafarian lifestyle.” I say, FUCK YOU. Many of you believe that the “Lifestyle” you like so much is about “Relaxing and smoking weed.” Nothing could be further from the truth. As a matter of fact, if Bob Marley was any kind of representation for your wanting the locks in the first place, you know absolutely NOTHING about Bob Marley.
He was a truly spiritual man. His hair, his lyrics and the way he lived his life were representative of this. (Yes, he did some questionable things. That isn’t what this post is about though) For you to take a spiritual symbol and chalk it up to your love of weed, is not only appropriation, it is down right disgusting and cruel. There is this gross misconception that just because religion is a weapon, an afterthought or something to reference during political debate in this country that it is the same in others. IT IS NOT. Your actions are shameful and mean. You are acting disrespectfully and you have chosen to do so with no forethought or concern for who you are hurting.
This “Hair style” that you are choosing to believe is about sticking it to your parents, smoking weed, “loving” Bob Marley (even thought you clearly know nothing about him) or even about “Love and peace” is SO MUCH BIGGER THAN THAT. It is just not bigger than that TO YOU. It isn’t “That big a deal” TO YOU. That is how you know without a shadow of a doubt that you are in fact a bigoted cultural appropriator. You just don’t give a damn. Privilege and entitlement reign supreme.

Racial-based hate crimes still make up like 49% of all hate crimes, period. That basically means that there is NOTHING as dangerous in this world as being non-white. Anti-black hate crimes make up nearly 3/4s of all racial hate crimes.

I’m about to write an post, as well as a guest post to a well-known external blog about this, and if need be, I will submit it to my local news organization for review, and I need for you to understand that before I proceed. This is not something you will be able to explain away or cover up. There is already a blog post that is spreading across tumblr about this, so it’s not like no one is going to hear about it. It’s already out there. Your staff has made a mistake.
You recently removed a blog titled deathtoallwhitepeople from your servers. This is understandable, and was expected, as the entire reason it was created was to point out the hypocrisy in how certain users are well-treated at the expense of others. However, you appear to have missed all of the following blogs:

These blog titles are equally reprehensible, equally offensive, and violate your Terms of Service in the same way. I can’t imagine why they are all allowed to remain.
I also need to point out that the 1st Amendment protects private citizens against governmental censorship. It does not provide protections against the actions of a private company, like yours. You have the option — the power — to do something about this, to stop such hateful terms from being used against a group of people who are being harmed and oppressed by them. You’ve already chosen to use that power, and therein lies the hypocrisy: you didn’t protect the free speech of the person or persons who started the deathtoallwhitepeople blog, or protect other people of color from the death threats they reported to you.
In doing what you have done, you let all of the people who were involved, along with anyone who is reading and reblogging the related posts, know that you care for the so-called 1st Amendment rights of white persons, but none for the rights of people of color.
I am disgusted by your actions, and ask that you treat your members the same — that you remove blogs that use the word “nigger” in their title, and do not allow anyone to use it in their URLs in the future.
