Don’t Leave your kids in the car.

Spread this like wildfire. This man, Terry Williams, made a PSA to spread the reality of what little children go through when locked in a hot car.

As it says in the USAtoday article:

A child’s body temperature can increase three to five times faster than an adult’s. That means only minutes left alone in a car can be fatal for a child.

"I’m sitting in the car with the windows rolled up cause I want to know how it feels to be left in the car,"

"As you can see, I’m sweating, like I can barely breathe out here, but my system is stronger than these little kids systems."

Tumblr I’m counting on to get this going. Spread it like wildfire.

This is a topic that make me sob every time I see reports on the news of children or animals suffering from being left in a hot car. These innocent lives who suffer like this cannot protect themselves.

So, please take the time to spread this message and help people to stop and think before considering to leave precious lives locked in a vehicle.

More information on Terry Williams and his PSA campaign go here:

I find myself objecting to the term ‘fool’. Just earlier this year, a woman got arrested for this, because she was homeless and couldn’t find anywhere to place her kids and needed to get to a job interview in hopes of further supporting her children. And then someone reported her and last I heard she was in jail and her kids got taken away.  BW PoC of course. Meanwhile a white woman at the same time, drove around w/ her kid on top of her car and she’s fine.

So no, I just ‘can’t’ with the ‘FOOL’ and the implications of laziness. And questions of ‘How could you do this, you must not love your kids’. And I’m pissed at anyone reblogging w/o any comments to the contrary about how shit like this gets propped up as laziness etc - and not reported as circumstances with no recourse for childcare, several place demanding ‘no kids’ or strongly frowning on it — just…

I can’t even get into how in some circumstances it can be safer for a child in a locked car, than in certain public places their parents may have to go.

Awareness of summer/heat dangers? Yes.

But this fucking; ‘Don’t be a fool’? Is some ignorance. Straight. Up. Ignorance.

There’s more going on here and thus there should be more than blaming a symptom.

Bolded for right on commentary that should be read.

seekingwillow makes a very damn good point, and I wish I’d caught it myself and I full on confess I fucked up and didn’t even think about it and should have. We don’t look at why people need to leave kids in cars. We definitely need to be talking about, as was said, “blaming more than a symptom”. seekingwillow is on the money.

(BTW, the case being for the woman who was arrested trying to get a job is: referenced is here. And the case of the woman with the child on TOP of the car is right here.)

Ummmm sorry but this isn’t true. While it is important to tell the truth to EMTs and medics about what/how much you’ve taken of something, it’s not illegal for us to divulge that information to officers on the scene. EMS isn’t the police and we won’t/don’t care about getting you in trouble, but what the cops choose to do with the information they obtain while on the call isn’t in our control.

PLEASE READ THE BOLDED
Also, paramedics don’t really have “patients” per say. Medical privacy and doctor-patient (not EMT-patient) privilege is more limited than you think. For instance, the Federal Rules of Evidence DO NOT recognize that privilege. And it can be limited in both civil and criminal proceedings.
So you SHOULD tell medical personnel about drugs and alcohol use because it can save your life, but be aware that you may need to lawyer up if the situation requires it.
And be aware that LifeHackable.com is a terrible source for ANYTHING EVER.

The Cheapest Generation: Why Aren’t Millennials Buying Cars or Houses?

What if Millennials’ aversion to car-buying isn’t a temporary side effect of the recession, but part of a permanent generational shift in tastes and spending habits? It’s a question that applies not only to cars, but to several other traditional categories of big spending—most notably, housing. And its answer has large implications for the future shape of the economy—and for the speed of recovery.

It’s safe to say that a decent number of Tumblr users are a part of the Millennial generation. So, tell us: Do you own a car or house? If not, why?

IT’S BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO DISPOSABLE INCOME YOU THUNDERING IDIOTS. Fucking preference has nothing to do with it. 50% of college graduates have no job! They all have the most student loan debt ever! What are you asking this question for?!

Also: housing is a good bit more expensive now.
My parents got a 15-year mortgage on a new house in the mid-70s. The house was $32,000. Average home price in that area now? $190,000.

So, home prices went up. Food prices went up. Health care prices went WAY UP. Rent prices went up. Higher education went up so damn high that some of us forgo that all together. Energy prices went up. Car prices went up.
Prices of prices went up.
We also pay cell phone bills, internet bills, data plans, text plans, online subscriptions, cable/satellite tv, netflix, DVR subscriptions — bills that didn’t even exist 30-40 years ago. We also use computers and smartphones and microwaves and other consumer electronics that didn’t exist 20-50 years ago.
We need medications and doctors and contact lenses and tampons and maxi pads and other things that cost money just to be alive and keep us healthy.
Most of us can’t afford to:
Get married and have a “Traditional” big wedding
Buy a house
Buy a new car
PLAN to have children
Take two, consecutive weeks of vacation.
Jobs that paid 50k in the late 1990s now pay between 30-35. Interest rates that favor consumers have gone down.
So I say, no. We are not choosing not to buy homes. We’re not choosing to take the bus in cities where there’s no good public transit. WE ARE NOT CHOOSING TO LIVE WHAT SOCIETY DEEMS AS AN UNDESIRABLE LIFESTYLE.
Don’t even get me started on the fact that these two people in the picture are young white hipsters. Young black and brown folks have been forgoing homeownership and buying new cars for decades, this shit isn’t new, pal. You’re just acting like this shit is new because it’s hitting white folks.
anyway, my point is: We are fucking broke.

(TW: Ableism, Medical Abuse, Neglect, ED (Weight), Ableist Language)

Three years ago, a 6-year-old Seattle girl called Ashley, who had severe disabilities, was, at her parents’ request, given a medical treatment called “growth attenuation” to prevent her growing. She had her uterus removed, had surgery on her breasts so they would not develop and was given hormone treatment. She is now known by the nickname her parents gave her — Pillow Angel.

The case of Ashley hit the media in January after publication of an article in a medical journal about her treatment. It reappeared in the news recently because of the admission by Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center that the procedures its doctors had performed to stop Ashley from growing and reaching sexual maturity violated state law. In Canada (as in Australia), a child can be sterilized only with the consent of a court.

At the time of the initial publicity about growth attenuation, Ashley’s parents wrote on their blog: “In our opinion only parents of special needs children are in a position to fully relate to this topic. Unless you are living the experience, you are speculating and you have no clue what it is like to be the bedridden child or their caregivers.”

I did live the experience. I lived it not as a parent or caregiver but as a bed-ridden growth-attenuated child. My life story is the reverse of Ashley’s.

“Ashley’s doctors may have used the term static encephalopathy to avoid the outcry that would have followed if people realized that it was being suggested that girls with cerebral palsy should have surgery to stunt their growth and prevent puberty.

You should absolutely read this.

Seriously, I’ve posted about this so many fucking times and it’s still one of the worst and most horrible things I have ever read. This is the ‘mental age’ argument used to neuter a six year old girl like a dog, so if she is ever raped, no one will have to deal with a pregnancy.

This is how ‘severe disability is a tragedy that happens to families of the disabled person’ is used to excuse unspeakable human rights abuses against a CHILD, and do you know how people ‘found out’ about it?

The doctors were so fucking proud of what they had done, they published a fucking PAPER on the ways they had medically experimented on this child, in order to keep her six years old FOREVER.

THIS HAPPENED DESPITE THAT FACT THAT IT WAS ILLEGAL TO DO SO.

THIS IS WHAT INFANTILIZATION DOES

THIS IS WHAT “MENTAL AGE” DOES

THIS IS WHAT ‘FOR HER OWN GOOD’ DOES

THIS IS WHAT ABLEISM DOES.

I’m hoping readers can see that my recent article and photo weren’t intended to demean black women. If anything, we are saying we WANT to be women of color. Can we be part of your group? Can we sit at your lunch table?

Ancient moon priestesses were called virgins. ‘Virgin’ meant not married, not belong to a man-a woman who was ‘one-in-herself.’ The very word derives from a Latin root meaning strength, force, skill; and was later applied to men: virle. Ishtar, Diana, Astarte, Isis were all all called virgin, which did not refer to sexual chasity, but sexual independence. And all great culture heroes of the past…, mythic or historic, were said to be born of virgin mothers: Marduk, Gilgamesh, Buddha, Osiris, Dionysus, Genghis Khan, Jesus-they were all affirmed as sons of the Great Mother, of the Original One, their worldly power deriving from her. When the Hebrews used the word, and in the original Aramatic, it meant ‘maiden’ or ‘young woman’, with no connotations to sexual chasity. But later Christian translators could not conceive of the ‘Virgin Mary’ as a woman of independent sexuality, needless to say; they distorted the meaning into sexually pure, chaste, never touched. When Joan of Arc, with her witch coven associations, was called La Pucelle-‘the Maiden,’ ‘the Virgin’ - the word retained some of its original pagan sense of a strong and independent woman. The Moon Goddess was worshipped in orgiastic rites, being the divinity of matriarchal women free to take as many lovers as they choose. Women could ‘surrender’ themselves to the Goddess by making love to a stranger in her temple.

Monica Sjoo and Barbara Mor, The Great Cosmic Mother - Rediscovering the Religion of the Earth (via rabbitinthemoon)

Wow while it’s SUPER IMPORTANT to understand that the concept of “virgin” has never really had the meaning of “sexless” until recent white westernness and colonial imperialism this babble about THE MOON GODDESS is awful and frankly ignorant. You cannot just cherry pick “strong laydee goddesses” and “important man heroes” from six or seven completely different cultures and time periods and pretend like they’re all some indication of a hidden MOON GODDESS TRUTH? Each of these female entities named here are representative of their own culture. Can we just have a discussion on the etymology of “virgin” in multiple languages and cultures and the significance of that without babbling like children about THE ALL SEEING MOON GODDESS and attempting to prove said MOON GODDESS by throwing a half ton of various peoples’ sacred ideas, figures, and stories into a woowoo magic blender?

There’s a great deal of truth to the idea of sacred femininity and sexual independence in various parts of the world. PLEASE STOP MAKING IT ABOUT ~*~*~DIANA~*~*~ AND ~*~*~ISHTAR~*~*~ OK. DO REAL RESEARCH INTO CULTURE.

Reblogging for commentary and for adding “woowoo magic blender” to my vocabulary.

Seriously, though. Can we please not do this, it’s appropriative, racist, and just disgusting. You wanna take down the Western-white concept of virginity, SUPER GREAT. But do it without stealing other people’s stuff, yeah? If you want to take down White Western virginity concepts, how about you just point out that it’s FUCKING ABSURD TO BEGIN WITH.

And your research - at least on the Greek and Roman stuff - leaves MOUNDS to be desired.

And if you want to talk about these other cultures - which I don’t think this OP should ever try to do again, frankly - how about doing good research, referencing sources FROM THAT CULTURE and celebrating them on their own rather than throwing them into WooWoo Magic Blender.

thisisblackprivilege:

Black privilege is being able to get money easily if you’re in poverty.

It’s harder for non-black people. Now, we have affirmative action, welfare, etc., all catering to black people.

Surely you should be able to link to some statistics proving the Black people benefit the most from welfare and affirmative action.

Surely you should.

Seeing as you’re interested in FACTS, right?

So put your money where your mouth is.

Now you know those stats showing that white women benefit the most from affirmative action & more white people get welfare are anathema to this fool. Next you’ll bring up who welfare was invented to help & really fuck up their whole world by pointing out that black people were excluded from it.

As a Welfare worker I can tell you this is wrong. The majority of the people who come into my job applying for Welfare are white. I speak to at least 20 people a day as a screener, and I see about 2 black families of those twenty. Probably 7 latin@ families. An asian family every other day. The rest are all white families.

And with what little amount of money a person can get from Welfare (an amount which you can barely survive on, and amount that is far less than the average rent in the area I work in for a two bed room apartment), those 2 black families, 7 latin@ families and asian family every other day take that money and they are thankful for what little help they can get, they go live in shitty apartments or with other families in a cramped house so that they can afford to pay rent on the meager amount they get from us a month. They bust their asses to SURVIVE.

But those white people? They are upset with the money they get. They wonder why if they paid taxes their whole lives, that they can only get such a small amount of money? They say it must be all of the POC coming in and taking all of the welfare money and all of the illegal immigrants who come in and stole welfare aid (nevermind the fact that you CANNOT RECEIVE AID if you are not a US Citizen or a Permanent Resident of more than 10 years). They say if POC would just get jobs and get off welfare we’d have more money to give them (yet somehow turn around and say that POC are taking all of their jobs, so that’s why they can’t find one). They say this to the other white applicants in the lobby or the WOC workers who are trying to help them get back on their feet. Out fucking loud.

Wanna know what white privilege is?

White privilege is being able to have the balls to go to a welfare office, be surrounded by other white people who are also applying, and complaining about how POC are taking all of the governments money, meanwhile POC are working shitty jobs and living in shit neighborhoods refusing to get the aid they NEED to help their families, because they will be shamed the minute they step into the building.

Motherfuckers are really going to believe that Taylor Swift didn’t know what a swastika was.

Really.

That’s her actual response.

And people will actually believe it.

Because she’s a cute white girl and it’s totally believable that she’s innocent enough to not know what’s going on around, because there’s no way someone as pretty, white, and blonde as her would ever do something so terrible.

But soft! What middle finger through yonder window breaks? It is M.I.A.’s and she is the worst person ever for doing it.

Mmmmm dat whiteness.

And the thing is, Whites are constantly positioning themselves as the utterly unbiased arbiters of what’s racist and what isn’t when they can’t recognize hardly any of it.  That’s like me trying to call myself a wine expert and constantly mistaking apple juice for vino.

Amanda Palmer
Why she kicks ass:
She is very involved in feminist movements, as well as being a pro choice, LGBT rights advocate.
She protests against the tolerance of rape in todays society
She also supports a ‘sex positive’ culture
Her music is fantastic

[Trigger warning: rape]
Actually, Amanda Palmer is extremely problematic. This post explains this in more detail, but basically:
She created the very ableist band Evelyn Evelyn that appropriated people with disabilities’ experiences (especially the black conjoined twins Millie and Christine McCoy), essentially using their experiences for humour, and she ignored her fans who criticised this behaviour
She pretended to rape a Katy Perry lookalike with a dildo onstage “in support of gay marriage”
She’s made jokes about the KKK and used racist slurs/appropriation in her music
She’s a fan of cultural appropriation and likes posing in appropriated outfits
I strongly disagree that she protests against the tolerance of rape in society, because she makes rape jokes that perpetuate the idea that rape isn’t a big deal. (I realise she’s a survivor herself, but that doesn’t excuse her behaviour).
I’m not telling you to stop liking her, but she’s done some incredibly problematic things and a lot of people have very valid reasons for disliking her.

…uh.

Let me show you why you’re a fucking idiot piece by piece, okay?

1) 76% of scholarships go to white people. Only .01% of all scholarships available exclude white people from applying.

2) Shelters only allow in PoC? What shelters would those be, hon? Because last I checked the reason that shelters are so saturated with PoC is because MOST WHITE PEOPLE HAVE A FUCKING PLACE TO FUCKING LIVE

3) More white people get ALL kinds of government aid than black people. So…WRONG AGAIN!

Develops vaccine using the stolen HeLa cells from a poor African American woman from Virginia named Henrietta Lacks just like billions of other scientists who didn’t give her or her family any recognition or any money for anything she’s done for the entire scientific/medical community. And it took a curious woman in biology class to wonder at all about this whole thing and now we know she died with people barely knowing her real name and now her family in their old age can barely afford health insurance and her grave didn’t even get a head stone until the 90s.

People should read the book “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot. What they did to that woman and her family was an outrage!

Reblogged for historical accuracy and for the fact that, no, Dr. Salk was not actually that great of a guy.

Well, I’ve changed the course of music five or six times. What have you done except fuck the president?

Eh this is completely wrong. He was actually quite fond of the Reagans. It was at a White House dinner however. Here is what actually happened. From his autobiography.

Miles writes: “She looked at me and turned all red and shit, then she said, ‘Well, what have you done that’s so important in your life? Why are you here?’
“Now, I just hate shit like this coming from someone who is ignorant, but who wants to be hip and has forced you into a situation where you’re talking to them in this manner. She brought this on herself. So then I said, ‘Well, I’ve changed music five or six times, so I guess that’s what I’ve done and I guess I don’t believe in playing just white compositions.’
“I looked at her real cold and said, ‘Now, tell me what have you done of any importance other than be white, and that ain’t important to me, so tell me what your claim to fame is?’”

Oh hey, look at that. The original quote was a scathing critique of race and unearned ambition but the popularized version simultaneously glorified sexism while confining Davis to the caricature of the angry black man.

Go fucking figure.
