Gerard Butler is "not gay, but not straight"

frankandhiskind:

Seriously, is it THAT hard to say “bisexual”.

Maybe bisexual isn’t the word for what he identifies as. For all you know, he identifies as pansexual or polysexual or something else - but doesn’t feel like having to go into Sexuality 101 for the press and doesn’t want to open that door because he is a very public figure and well, let’s face it, if someone says “I’m pansexual” or “I’m polysexual” people often don’t know what they’re talking about or think they’re trying to be cool. And don’t get me started on the really ignorant reactions to things like demisexuality.

I realize the article didn’t give much detail, but bisexuality or any of the non-monosexualities are not just a halfway point between straight and gay or the only option for not being straight or gay/lesbian. They’re not just the catch-all for “none of the above”.

Sexuality is really quite difficult. Labels and identities should not be applied to people because they fit someone else’s definition of something. The word “bisexual” doesn’t mean the same everywhere and to everyone. You can’t just say “well, you meet the technical requirements, so you should ID’ as bi.”

Maybe it’s hard to say bisexual because that’s not what he is. “Been with men and been with women” does not actually automatically equal bisexual.

The only thing that equals bisexual is “I identify as bisexual”. And if Gerard Butler wants to use the word or not, or if he doesn’t want to use any words and he just wants to enjoy his sexuality and his partners and what not, that’s fine by me.
