Hurricane Sandy Remnants Expected to Worsen the Flooding of Wawa, State of Emergancy Still in Place Michipicoten First Nation Reserve to Remain Stranded. Again

12 members of the Micoten First Nation reserve were airlifted earlier this week due to health conditions as the rest of the community was left stranded on the flooding reserve. Wawa and surounding communities were declared a state of emergency earlier this week and this extended to the Micoten, who were left unable to leave do to crumbling roads.

Not yet recovered from the flood earlier this week, the creeks which run through Lake Superior continue to overflow, causing damage to the houses in the area. Residents can only leave the reserve by airlift as the roads have crumbled due to years of neglect despite constant calls to the government and attempts despite lacking government support, within the community to fix it.

The road will take time to fix and time is not on anyone’s side. The Trans-Canada highway which would provide access off the reserve in this situation, has not seen a set date by Ministry of Transport.

The mayor of Wawa is calling for trucks to carry sandbags, gravel and other equipment, to create a levy of sorts because there are 700 people who can not physically leave in a state of emergency.

Let me repeat that.
