So I just emailed Straight But Not Narrow, asking them where there proceeds go (since they sell all those t-shirts and wristbands and whatnot).

they actually pocket all the money. It goes towards SBNN stuff (whatever that even is?). NONE of it goes to any sort of LGBT charity. Am I naive for being surprised by this? There are so many LGBT causes that could really use that money (homeless LGBT youth, AIDS/HIV stuff, etc), and they aren’t donating ANY percentage to these groups? And these are our “allies”?

Is this common practice for activist-y groups? I have never looked into it too much before, but since I was already suspicious of SBNN I had to ask.

so i went to their website and it says they’re a ‘marketing company who uses its powers for good’. for what good exactly? letting everyone know that you’re a decent human being?

Yeah. I’m not sure if other awareness-raising campaigns (like Noh8) actually donate their money either…but they’re a lot less douchey than SBNN, which is just a bunch of straight people patting each other on the back for having a gay friend.

NOH8 does not donate to other foundations as their ‘primary objective’, but they have donated to “and partnered with The Gay & Lesbian Task Force, The Trevor Project, GLSEN, Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD, the You Are Loved Project, and Freedom to Marry in addition to AIDS Walk Programs all over the country (helping to raise funds for Gay Mens Health Crisis in New York and AIDS Project LA in Los Angeles)”. Basically, they sometimes make donations or slap their name on something that has a big name on it but they don’t make it their main goal to donate to the important cause that they’re supposedly supporting.

H8SUX is apparently a “private T-shirt company with a directly charitable mission”. Laughing that they compared themselves to TOMS (see this post) because for every shirt bought, they give a *~FREE~* one to a teen to wear. Like that helps anything.

And finally, FCKH8 (run by the same people as H8SUX so what can you expect, really). They use the words “private T-shirt company with a directly charitable mission” again so.

Any other ~~ally ego boosters~~ shops similar to these that should be checked out?

See, this was kind of my fear of posting that…it seems like a lot of “awareness raising” groups don’t donate to charity. Though they do have the added bonus of being just a really douchey idea. But still, it actually isn’t THAT surprising that they don’t donate. I just don’t get how it makes you an “ally” to wear a t shirt .

Why help oppressed groups when you can profit off them, amirite?
