Feel free to add your own reasons.
Why don’t I want you to donate to Autism Speaks?
- They consider the opinions of actual autistics not worth listening to.
- They consider the opinions of “autism parents” over our own.
- They infantilize us in order to suppress us.
- They make us out to be family destroying “people with autism”.
- They would like it if autistic children would cease to be born.
- They’ve turned who we are into a 24/7 money machine.
- “World Free of Autism”
- They’re spreading lies and misinformation.
- Those lies make it much more difficult for us to live our lives.
- They encourage slacktivism.
- We’ve got ASAN, donate to them instead. They actually consider us full-fledged human beings. The Autistic Self Advocacy Network is run by autistic people, for autistic people. We know best how to take care of our own.
They don’t help anyone. If you want to help your cousin/sister/kid down the street/that one kid in that one class — don’t donate to autism speaks. Find out what they need and get it for them.
If you want to help autistics in general, donate to ASAN or CAFETY.
