And if you get called out for being one of these - even if you totally didn’t realize or mean it - if you don’t have the decency to say an earnest “I’m sorry, I fucked up, I did wrong and hurt you, my bad, I know my intentions don’t matter as much as your hurt/anger/etc, and I won’t do it again and I’m going to educate myself” and then sit down and listen, seriously, GTFO.

Because you know what, I know people fuck up. But there’s a difference between the people I’m following and I’m not following anymore. And the difference is that the people I’m following may not be perfect, they may have made missteps, but they’ve had the grace to know when to say “sorry, I did wrong, you’re totally right, I’m going to get my shit together”. They don’t expect the people they offend, hurt, or anger to ever trust them again. They don’t come feeling entitled to trust or forgiveness and they show that in how they conduct themselves - and oddly, that’s exactly how people are more likely to get my trust and forgiveness (at least for me personally).

That’s what I respect. Someone willing to know the power of a genuine apology and willing to examine what they did wrong and RIGHT THEMSELVES because they give a shit about other people - especially people they have power over - to do it and not expect cookies.

So maybe first of all above all, know that you can and will be wrong. Know that other people matter. Respect when people tell you about their truths and lives and respect their wishes and call them what they want to be called, leave them alone when they want to be left alone, and remember just how human and important they are.
